Within linving memory, the river Loire has been for man, a main artery of communication and privileged exchange.

The river Loire became one of the principal econmic arteries of the kingdom between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In 1642, the Briare Canal allowed an opening into the parisian market.

During the 19th century, the lateral canal and the famous Briare canal bridge allowed commerce, to and fro to extend.

An intense activity developed around the water way : mariners, merchants, haulers, raftmen, tollcollectors, dockers, carters, ropemakers, fishmen, millers, ferrymen, sandsellers, washwomen, inkeepers…

Awonderful history of man, rich and strong, relations between “down to earth men” and those from the river, from the canal that you will discover during your visit.

Come and discover!
